Arigatou Miyazaki Senpai (Pantheon of Authors)

(Yes, I realize he’s an artist. He’s still my senpai.)

I once had someone tell me that my pacing was “different.” Like, in a place where he expected there to be a climax, I would de-escalate. He mentioned later that he understood that better after he began watching anime.

Most of the time, the cast in my brain are in anime. I built a genetic system in my novel that results in a cast with colors everything from blue to green to purple. That’s not actually something I set out to do, but rather something I had to explain away several years after the fact.

Sonder (Pantheon of Authors: JKR)

I’m a bit unclear on whether this is a real word or not, but I saw it in like a Buzzfeed list or something that said it was the realization that other people have lives as complex as your own. That’s a concept people seem to struggle to grasp, even good people who are nice most of the time.

I think imagining others complexly, as John Green would say, is something that comes naturally to no one. People have to be taught to be compassionate. I struggle with empathy a lot. Not an “I can’t imagine what you’re going through” struggle with empathy. More like an “I can imagine what you’re going through so hard it’s making me sad/happy/angry/fill-in-the-blank.” I blame that on how much time I’ve spent reading. Continue reading

My Life in Books (Announcement Post)

So I went to snoop around my local library this week, and in my browsing of the stacks, I found myself thinking about American Horror Story. Random, right? So I back up and look at all the spines, and there’s an orange spine with AHS font on it. Naturally, I took it home. (If anyone ever tells you not to judge a book by it’s cover, you call them on their B.S. Covers are important. The most important content in the world would still go unread if the cover designers dropped the ball. And the spines are the most important part of the book cover.) Continue reading

Nano Week 2

Well. I’m at 1300 words. Which is 500 more than last week? I don’t even know. I haven’t written anything this week.

For the record, I’m not officially participating in Nanowrimo this year. I don’t think I mentioned that last week. I was aiming for a personal goal of 30K this month. It doesn’t even look like that’s gonna happen at this point. I work retail, and we’re gearing up for Christmas, and by the time I get home, I don’t have enough energy left to make words. Nano Week 1

So. It’s that time of year. It’s National Novel Writing Month.

I spent most of the first week of Nanowrimo exploring and shopping. I’m all stoked to take new brand pictures (and general Facebook profile stuff, because I’ve had the same profile pic and cover photo for two years). I want a burgundy baseball cap. Where does one acquire a burgundy baseball cap? (In other news, I got a new plaid shirt that’s gray with a little bit of burgundy, and apparently, I am obsessed with burgundy. Which would explain why fall is my favorite season.)

Anyway, my current word count is 825. I’m writing the second half of my book from scratch. I’m loving it so far. One of my main characters is being presented at a coming out ball, and he’s a guy, and it’s hilarious. I’m excited to write more, I just have to do it.

Happy Halloween

I did it. I actually did it. I wrote a flash fiction piece every day this month. Well. I missed a few days and caught up on others, but the point is that I wrote thirty-one pieces of flash fiction and they are over on my Wattpad if you want to read them. That’s a pretty good excuse for not blogging this week, right? Right.

I Have Nothing to Say

Hello, Friday, my old friend. Actually, I don’t really like Fridays. I like Thursdays, because the week is almost over but you’re not quite wasting weekend yet. And I work retail, so I don’t really get weekends anyway. Continue reading
